Special Needs Dentist

What Is Special Needs Dentistry?

Special needs dentistry refers to dental care designed for individuals who require extra support due to physical, intellectual, or developmental conditions. These may include autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, sensory processing disorder, or medically complex diagnoses. At Sweet Tooth Pediatric Dentistry, our goal is to reduce anxiety, increase comfort, and build long-term trust—one visit at a time.

Led by Dr. Tiana Osbourne, a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist, our practice is equipped to meet the needs of children who benefit from more customized care, communication, and clinical planning.

Dr. Osbourne completed a Fellowship in Dental Care for the Developmentally Disabled at Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine, in addition to her Pediatric Dentistry Residency at St. Barnabas Health System and her General Practice Residency at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center. Her fellowship training focused on caring for patients with special health care needs, and it shapes how every visit is planned at our Yukon office.

How We Support Patients with Disabilities

As a trusted special needs dentist, Dr. Osbourne and our team offer:

  • Flexible scheduling to allow extra time for your child to adjust
  • Desensitization appointments to help introduce tools, staff, and sounds at your child’s pace
  • One-on-one attention in a calm, distraction-free treatment room
  • Collaborative care with pediatricians, therapists, or caregivers when needed
  • Visual aids and kid-friendly explanations to increase predictability and reduce stress
  • Comfort techniques and Sedation Dentistry when needed for safe and stress-free treatment

Our team takes the time to listen, observe, and adapt. Whether your child needs frequent breaks, modified instruments, or a sensory-friendly approach, we work together to make every visit a success.

Autism Friendly Dental Care in Yukon and Oklahoma City

For children on the autism spectrum, a dental visit can mean unfamiliar sounds, bright lights, new people, and being touched in a sensitive area, all at once. We plan around that. Before the first appointment, we can share social stories and visuals so your child knows what to expect, and pre-visit tours are available on request. Desensitization appointments let your child meet our team and get used to our tools and sounds at their own pace before any treatment begins. During visits, we work in a calm, distraction-free room, allow frequent breaks, and adjust how we communicate for children who are nonverbal or communicate in nontraditional ways.

What Services Are Available for Special Needs Patients?

We provide the full spectrum of pediatric dental services to our special needs patients, including:

We personalize treatment based on your child’s abilities, age, attention span, sensory profile, and medical history. Your child’s care plan is never one-size-fits-all—it’s built just for them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are you an autism friendly dentist?

Yes. Care for children on the autism spectrum is a central part of our special needs dentistry. Before the first visit, we can share social stories and visuals so your child knows what to expect, and pre-visit tours are available on request. We also offer desensitization appointments and a calm, distraction-free treatment room, and we adjust our pace and communication to each child.

What if my child is nonverbal or unable to sit still?

We are experienced in working with children who communicate in nontraditional ways or have difficulty with movement. We adjust our communication style and appointment flow to meet their needs. Parents and caregivers are always welcome to stay during treatment for familiar support.

Is sedation safe for children with special needs?
